Merge the verge into a habitat haven
Reduce mowing and create valuable habitat for insects, lizards and birds. Set the mower aside and change up from a monoculture to a polyculture.
ON THE VERGE in this issue of MMM comes from Valentine with this tree being the outstanding feature. No issue for these residents with the buttress roots right on the gutter. It’s a matter of the tree being given a higher priority than its potential to dislodge the concrete or drop leaves or obstruct people.
This garden was one of two featured in the Transform Your Lawn workshop conducted by the Valentine Sustainable Neighbourhood Group in April.
But more than that, they are providing small ecological niches where native plants can thrive and increase the diversity of habitat for small animals.
