Slashed to within an inch of their lives – set back for new Landcare group on Munibung Hill’s north
Lucilla Ridge Landcare

In an attempt to help Munibung Hill recover some of her former tree and grasses species, a Landcare group has been approved to help rehabilitate a small patch of land off Lawson Road, Macquare Hills.

The plan is (was) to replace mechanical slashing as a means of land manage-ment with a manual hand based approach. Based on allowing plants to regenerate with native trees and ground cover left to grow, the idea is that invasive species will be weeded out manually or over time reduced due to the natural tree canopy shading out unwanted species, thus reducing the requirements for further intervention. The plan is that healthy regrowth means the invasive species and weeds will be outcompeted by natives.

This is a very long term approach but one that is tried and true in broad scale situations. If only it is not interfered with. The seriousness of the matter has been conveyed to Council and Lake Macquarie Landcare.
