Night sky, curiosity, telescope, better with a dark sky

John Carr is a dedicated amateur astronomer who has been scanning the night sky for many, many years.

In keeping with his curiosity to know what the night sky has to reveal he appreciates that good instruments are essential.

Recently, the manufacturer of his telescope, visited Lake Macquarie.

In the picture, John (left), Eddie Bernard (right), Peter Read (centre).  Off camera, Mark Anderson and Stuart Carter.

John, Eddie, Mark, Stuart and Rachel Thomson, are members of the Urban Night Sky Place project team, a sub-committee of the Munibung Hill Conservation Group, advocating for greater awareness of how artificial light at night (ALAN) is polluting the night sky and  blocking our view of the stars.

Peter Read from Victoria operates a telescope manufacturing business and manufactures Dobsonian Telescope instruments which range in size from 8 inches to a massive 40 inches.

Peter was up servicing John’s big 28 inch f3.3 telescope. The night wasn’t perfect for viewing but did manage to view M42 Great Orion Nebula and the Moon both wonderful sights.
