Defend night skies – six ways

Six feel good ways to defend night skies
There is something for everyone when it comes to making a contribution towards a better future for us and our children.

A NIGHT SKY DEFENDER is someone who works to reduce light pollution and preserve night skies. They may work in a variety of ways, including:

  • Educating the public: Leading campaigns to raise awareness about the ecological value of night skies
  • Advocating for change: Working with policymakers to promote ordinances and regulations to reduce light pollution
  • Collaborating with others: Working with media, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders to bring attention to the issue
  • Introducing sustainable lighting: Working to reduce or eliminate unnecessary light
  • Collecting data: Gathering information about night sky conditions and lighting in communities and parks
  • Training others: Teaching guides and outfitters how to lead night sky-related trips

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) recognizes the efforts of night sky defenders with the Dark Sky Defender Award. The award is given to individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the IDA’s mission.
